Erosion Concerns at Galloways and Dengemarsh
Following a further inspection of the Galloways and Dengemarsh area by our Technical Officer Tony Hills , concerns are increasing after noting just how much erosion has taken place due to this week’s south westerly gale. With high tides forecast again in two weeks time of 8.3 m it will only need further bad weather to make the potential of a breakthrough, particularly at Dengemarsh, ever more inevitable . Remedial works in this area by the Environment Agency are not due to commence until December 2009 and DOC continues to highlight its concerns with the EA.
If the present situation is allowed to continue beach habitat will be damaged and erosion accelerated which in turn could create a change to the ‘Ness’ itself. Continued substantial beach-feeding needs to be carried out urgently in order to stop this alarming erosion rate, carrying with it a potential breach of sea defences and consequent flooding .
