Now you see it - now you don’t!
Following the enormous shingle loss during the recent high tide, much needed emergency work was carried out by the Environment Agency to the sea defences along the Broomhill Frontage and MOD Lookout to repair our sea defences in order to protect the Marsh from flooding.! A stream of lorries brought endless lorry loads of shingle during the week from the Bretts Quarry up to the sea wall in order to repair the damage caused. But how long will it last? High tides are forecast for the 15/16. October 2008 and time is running out!
At £60.00 per cubic metre the re-shingling emergency works are a race against time until proper sea defences are installed and are highly likely to get washed away in part with the next tide. Once washed down further onto the beach the material becomes ‘untouchable’ unless Natural England would give permission for this shingle to be bulldozed back up the beach again ! All this, whilst an enormous surplus of shingle (all washed down from Broomhill) is creating problems further down the coast at Dungeness , but cannot be re-cycled due to restrictive European Habitats policies enforced by Natural England.
